iOS 16 is sure to offer some exciting improvements for iPhone users.
Apple is known for keeping its mobile operating system a secret until its official launch. Numerous leaks have led to the reveal of the iOS 16 beta release date, but that doesn't mean we're any closer to discovering all the new features for iOS 16.
Apple fans are clamoring for information about the operating system update, and rumors are rife about what we can expect to see on release day.
The good news? We have plenty of rumors, leaks, and social media news to keep us busy until the company Apple Cupertino, California, finally unveils the new operating system. Here's everything we know about iOS 16 so far.
Release date: When is iOS 16 coming out?
Apple recently announced that its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will take place this summer from June 7 to 11.
The event typically takes place when Apple announces new software features coming to iPhones, iPads, and Macs next year, including iOS 16 for iPhones and iPads. In previous years, Apple has released the first beta of its next-generation mobile operating system at WWDC, with a full public release the following fall.
iPhone and iPad users installing iOS 16 on their devices will be able to try all the new features early, but it's up to developers to get their apps ready for all of us to use, and that's what our developers have been doing for our customers for over 10 years!
Last year, for example, Apple released iOS 15 on September 20, about a week after the event. iPhone 13. If Apple's iPhone 14 event took place in September, as iPhone events usually do, iOS 16 would likely be ready for release.
Compatibility: Will iOS 16 be available for your iPhone?
Apple has released a new iOS every year since the launch of its first iPhone in 2007, and each one is compatible with slightly older models. For example, iOS 15 is compatible with an iPhone 6S, released in 2015. An Apple developer has revealed that iOS 16 will run on iPhones with an A10 processor or higher. This means it will be compatible with the iPhone 7 and later, but not the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, or the 2016 SE.
iPadOS 16 will probably not be compatible with the iPad Mini 4, iPad 5, iPad Air 2 or iPad Pro 9.7 and 12.9 inches.
What can we expect in iOS 16?
The most persistent rumor involves continued improvements to the widget feature Apple first introduced in iOS 14. Apple's iOS 16 is likely to introduce a new way to interact with widgets, which are essentially small windows into the data stored on your phone, often an extension of an app.
But LeaksApplePro suggests that iOS 16 brings large interactive widgets and a possible redesign of icons.
The image tweeted by LeaksApplePro appears to show apps displayed in larger-than-usual squares and rectangles, leaving room for more information such as today's weather, specific reminders, and the currently playing song. The image has sparked some skepticism, with some claiming that the Apple TV remote logo is incompatible with the remote's appearance.
In addition to the improvements to widgets, LeaksApplePro points out that there will be small changes to existing features such as FaceTime and iMessage. New features may include a new way to organize apps into folders, a new design for the App Store and redesigned sharing options, improved support for the Apple Pencil for notes and a new fitness application called Healthbook.
Other rumored iOS 16 features are related to unannounced Apple hardware. For example, rumors indicate that an Apple VR/AR headset will be released later in 2022 or possibly next year. Beyond that, Apple is also reportedly working on a wearable mixed reality device called Apple Glasses that would work with the iPhone.
What's more, MacRumours reported in late 2021 that this year's Apple devices like the iPhone 14 could add features collision detection where a device would contact emergency services if it detects that you have been in an accident. Such a feature would require new features introduced in iOS 16, though Apple may wait to launch this feature until we are closer to the launch of iPhone 14.
According to MacRumors, iOS 16 will bring support for tracking devices AirTags still in development by Apple.
AirTags are small Apple-branded devices that can be attached to items like keys or wallets and then located by an iPhone or other Apple device. The idea is that if you lose something with one of these tags attached, you can find it through the Find My iPhone app.
Conclusion
While iOS 15 didn't bring many major changes, iOS 16 is said to be a more substantial upgrade. Rumors point to several new features that could be announced at WWDC and released in the fall, including a new "always-on" display mode for iPhone and iPad that would work similarly to Android devices. Other rumored features include a new Apple News app, improved Siri functionality, and tweaked privacy controls.
